Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Awards $1.15M Grant to A New Leaf

(Mesa, AZ) – Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has awarded A New Leaf $1.15 million to support A New Leaf’s La Mesita Emergency Family Homeless Shelter located in Mesa, Arizona – the only homeless shelter facility in the East Valley of Metropolitan Phoenix that provides housing to families with children.

“We are thrilled beyond measure to receive this award,” said A New Leaf’s CEO Michael Hughes. “Piper Trust is incredibly generous and brings a high level of credibility to community projects like the La Mesita Shelter. These precious funds will provide 24/7 crisis support and housing for families with a safe path out of homelessness.”

A New Leaf’s La Mesita Shelter offers 16 units of family emergency housing. The La Mesita Campus also offers 80 units of Affordable Housing for low-income households, with 30 units reserved for households that are chronically homeless or with special needs, with a preference for Veterans. Construction of an additional 30 housing units will begin in March 2016.

Onsite support services, available to shelter and housing residents, include case management, workforce development, behavioral health counseling for children, a Head Start preschool and after-school program, financial opportunity center, wellness center, health and dental care services, educational classes and referrals for additional services.

A New Leaf’s capital campaign to support the La Mesita Shelter has a goal of $11.5 million, and the grant from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust means that A New Leaf’s campaign is now 95% of goal, with $577,625 left to raise in coming weeks.
