Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
Help Your Community and Learn a Valuable Skill
A New Leaf's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is focused on connecting every qualified Maricopa County taxpayer to a tax credit that could transform their lives. Volunteers prepare and e-file tax returns for hard working families and individual taxpayers to receive the maximum benefits available, saving them hundreds of dollars in paid preparer fees. VITA volunteers do meaningful work in the fight against poverty. Services are provided free of charge. Click here for the Frequently Asked Questions document, which is in both English and Spanish.
All volunteer tax preparers must be IRS Certified. Certification courses are held days, evenings, and/or weekends and certification is offered in December and January. They are held at several locations around the Valley.
- Courses are typically 24 hours total, with the certification test taken online during the last class.
- Volunteers receive a tax certificate upon successful completion of training.
- A copy of the tax certificate must be shared with the site coordinator.
- Link and Learn e-learning, a self-paced training program on the IRS website, is also available for online certification.
