Chances are you’ve read reports lately of migrant children being sheltered by local nonprofit agencies. It’s a compelling story, and any parent would want their child to be safe and protected. A New Leaf is on the front lines caring for unaccompanied children who need help at this critical window of their lives.
Questions about what people can do to help have surged across social media and into the airways. There are a variety of things you can do to help these children who come from traumatic backgrounds and need specialized care.
Donations of new clothing and gift cards to local stores are especially welcome. Children come to A New Leaf with just the clothes on their back. They need basic essentials like toiletries, new clothing (shoes, pants, shirts, and other kinds of clothing), as well as hygiene kits and personal care items. Messages of hope and love to cheer children are also appreciated. A New Leaf’s dedicated staff provide meals and activities to keep the children’s spirits up and deliver round-the-clock care, usually for 30-60 days before a child is reunited with family.
Your donation will go toward a program that is unique among shelters caring for unaccompanied children. A New Leaf residences are loving, caring homes with less than 25 beds each focused on the attentive care and emotional support of children who need extra help at this time. A New Leaf is able to build a strong rapport with the children in a short time due to the nature of our smaller sites, bilingual staff, and the desired staff – child ratio. The safety and well-being of the children are the highest priority.
