Everyone Deserves a Safe Place to Live: Affordable, Supportive Housing Project for East Valley |
|
|

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 4, 2012
Contact: Torrie Taj, Chief Operating Officer 602.721.4317
Everyone Deserves a Safe Place to Live:
Affordable, Supportive Housing Project for East Valley
MESA, AZ --- A New Leaf (a 501c3 human service agency) is moving forward with the La Mesita Project, an affordable, supportive housing initiative in Mesa that will include 80 mixed-use apartments and 16 emergency homeless shelter units with onsite services, community space and light-rail transportation adjacent to the property.
Thanks to a Low Income Housing Tax Credit award from the Arizona Department of Housing and additional support by local cities and communities, the aging La Mesita Family Homeless Shelter will be transformed in several phases through two distinct re-development plans.
Realizing the need and taking up the cause for affordable housing with human services, are many tremendous supporters including Arizona Department of Housing Director, Michael Trailor; from the City of Mesa, Mayor Scott Smith, City Manager Chris Brady, Acting Assistant to the City Manager Scott Bouchie, Council Members, the Housing and Community Development Division led by Tammy Albright and many more dedicated staff.
Special thanks and recognition go to A New Leaf’s co-developer, Native American Connection’s Dede Yazzie Devine and Joe Keeper; to the Architectural Resource Team (ART), Pat Rehse, Doug McCord and staff for the gold LEED design; to the Corporation for Supportive Housing and most especially, to long-time friends and supporters, Valley of the Sun United Way and Mesa United Way who have helped A New Leaf realize this dream.
A New Leaf has been able to help residents overcome the obstacles that led to their homelessness for decades by providing emergency shelter and services.
The impact of homelessness has devastating results including long-standing, impaired behavioral and physical health. National statistics show that formerly homeless people are more capable of dealing with their chronic issues when given the opportunity to move into quality, affordable housing. Once there, residents concentrate on positive growth through essential, onsite services to help ensure their healthier future.
A New Leaf looks forward to continuing the mission of Helping Families…Changing Lives through this time tested endeavor. CEO Michael Hughes states, “The effects of affordable, supportive housing, along with the homeless shelter and onsite services, will be a win-win for the whole community.”

Mesa, AZ –A New Leaf received $75,000 from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. The funds will support the EMPOWER program, which provides housing and support services to homeless and foster care youth. The award was accepted by Michael T. Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of A New Leaf.
“Since the Trust began its grantmaking in 1998, it has awarded more than $93 million to 411 Arizona nonprofit organizations. The Trust has continued to further the causes Nina Pulliam supported during her life. As Trustees, we are pleased to continue her legacy of helping people in need, protecting animals and nature, and enriching community life,” said Frank E. Russell, Trustee chairman.
“The Trust is pleased to continue to build on its legacy of community grantmaking through the wonderful work of the Trust family of grantees,” said Harriet M. Ivey, Trust President and CEO. “And, of the 25 organizations receiving funding, four are first-time Trust grant recipients.” Ivey added.
The Trust recognized 15 organizations helping people in need with grant commitments totaling $874,000, which includes grants to three organizations assisting individuals and families affected by the Arizona fires. “Nina spent a lifetime helping others, and her Trust has evolved into a strong resource for nonprofit groups in her beloved hometown of Phoenix. With a strong emphasis on encouraging self-sufficiency, the Trust assists individuals, including the elderly and disabled, women, children, and their families,” Trustee Carol P. Schilling said.
The Trust awarded $861,500 to 10 organizations protecting animals and nature, which includes grants to two organizations assisting animals affected by the Wallow fire.
These are extraordinary times. And, our grantees are doing an exceptional job of serving their communities and furthering Nina Pulliam’s legacy through their daily work and ongoing commitments to their life-changing missions,” said Edmund H. Portnoy, Ph.D., Arizona grants programs director for the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust.
“The Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program continues to bring the dream of a college education to those who are overlooked by traditional scholarship programs,” said Trustee Nancy M. Russell. “Since the Nina Scholars program began in 2001, it has touched the lives of more than 234 men and women in Arizona. The 11th cohort of 13 students will begin their studies this fall,” Russell added.

Homeless Shelter Wins SRP Solar System
Mesa, AZ – A New Leaf acquired enough votes in the SRP Earth Wise Energy ProgramTM to win a FREE solar system for La Mesita Family Homeless Shelter. Thanks to the SRP and its business and residential customers who signed up to help La Mesita Go Green, A New Leaf will be able cut costs and expand resources.
Three non-profits won the competition for votes: A New Leaf, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, and Hospice of the Valley. Each will receive installation of a 10-kilowatt (kW), conventional, fixed, flat-panel solar photovoltaic (PV) system as well as the maintenance of the PV systems for two years. Four runners up will receive solar hot water units.
SRP uses 100% of the funds invested in the Earth Wise Energy ProgramTM to expand solar technology for Valley nonprofits. For $3 a month, the program is a convenient, cost-effective way for customers to make a difference while allowing local nonprofits to offset a portion of their energy use with solar energy, which ultimately reduces monthly electric bills.
La Mesita’s 30-unit shelter provides services to help homeless families with minor-aged children become self-reliant. Residents agree to seek employment and work toward self-sufficiency during their stay for up to 120 days. La Mesita provides services to approximately 500 residents each year.

EVMC Homeless Shelter Resident Inspires Residents & Supporters Alike
Mesa AZ--- “He whoever saves one life, saves the world entire.” This quote, from the movie “Schindler’s List,” and the Talmud, was spoken in appreciation by an EVMC resident as he addressed the audience of supporters during the January 26 ribbon cutting celebration for two new, on-site buildings. Having already helped 20 of the 84 men at the Shelter acquire employment, Robert is a true inspiration not only to supporters, but to the men themselves.
Pat Gilbert, a proponent of the shelter and CAO of the Marc Center in Mesa, cut the ceremonial ribbon in honor of Margie Frost, EVMC’s founder. On hand were A New Leaf’ staff, board members and CEO Michael T. Hughes, City of Mesa District 1 Councilmember Dave Richins, government officials, generous funders and volunteers.
The new buildings feature a commercial kitchen and multi-purpose/dining room, basic needs rooms for new donation storage and distribution and a bike maintenance shop. Recent renovation projects also include the newly designed and manufactured sleeping bay in the main building, once a bingo hall. Funding for the two new buildings was provided by City of Mesa CDBG Federal Stimulus dollars, the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, Timkin Foundation, Gesner-Johnson Family Foundation, the CW & Modene Neely Charitable Foundation and additional dedicated funding sources.
This joint venture launches a new era for EVMC as it enhances services to men facing the challenges of homelessness. Thanks to recent funding from Salt River Project, the City of Chandler CDBG, the Department of Housing and the extraordinary in-kind support from Shane Orlando’s Community Restoration project, all that remains to be raised is an estimated $55,000 to finish the 2ndPhase of EVMC’s “extreme makeover.” A New Leaf is optimistic that local corporations will come to the aid of the shelter.
For over 10 years, A New Leaf’s EVMC Shelter has served thousands of homeless men by providing life skills training, work assistance, counseling, socialization skills, basic needs and shelter. With respect and compassion, case managers diligently work with residents to set personal goals, paving the way to economic and social self-sufficiency. Additionally, volunteers serve meals daily, provide health care assessments, assist with GED preparedness and so much more.
